Chicago native Kurt Morrison defines his art as an expression of strength and his personal resolve to succeed. He grew up in a working class neighborhood where money was tight in a large family and he was kept out of trouble by strict parents. Morrison was athletic and popular in school, but he also displayed a talent for writing and art that was rare among his friends. His plans for college were cut short when his father became ill and passed away unexpectedly. He left school and went to work to help support his family. Looking back Morrison says, “It was traumatic and difficult. I was young and thought my life was over. I know now it was a defining moment that led me to the creativity that was deep inside me.”
Morrison studied in his spare time and eventually received his high school diploma. He was encouraged to take some art classes at a local community college by an old friend of the family who owned an antique shop. He learned to draw and was a natural at figurative work. Yet, Morrison found even more freedom as he experimented with different forms of abstract expressions. Over the years he has worked in a wide range of styles that include mixed media and assemblages. Morrison prefers bold colors and his abstract compositions juxtapose different textures to create movement. His work is challenging yet pleasing, colorful yet balanced, and in the end there is a solid substantial quality that appeals to a wide array of people. Morrison still lives and creates art in his home town, and his work has been shown in many exhibitions throughout North America.
