Contemporary photographer Kate Carrigan was born and raised in New York City. She is an urban woman who went to college in upstate New York. After college, Carrigan spent most of her twenties teaching in public schools. This was rewarding, but after a few years she no longer could ignore a growing passion for artistic expression. Photography became an increasingly more important part of her life. She eventually began working as a commercial photographer and within a couple of years she was creating and selling her own work. In Carrigan’s imagery she is interested in capturing reality with the camera. But it is her personal version of reality that defines her finished artworks. Carrigan is influenced by the impressionist masters, and many of the great 20th century abstract painters. “What the camera captures is only part of the picture,” Carrigan explains, “To communicate the entire experience I prefer to add my touches and enhance the image. Dimensional perspective, color perceptions, and fleeting instants of light that someone experiences in a given moment are not always present in a simple photograph. I want to show not only what I see at the exact moment a picture is taken, but also what I was feeling when I stopped to record the way an object looked at a particular time of day or night.”
