San Francisco native Max Hansen has always followed his own path. This self-taught artist has made a living as a waiter, a landscaper, a bartender, and a musician. He enjoys rock-climbing but is most comfortable in the city. “I have done a lot of jobs and have many interests. But I have painted and written poetry since my early teens”, says Hansen, “painting for me is a necessary part of life. It is a way for me to express what I feel about the environment I live in.” In recent years, painting has become his focus, and his work is gaining notoriety as more people are exposed to his natural talent.Hansen is interested in the interplay of color, shape, and texture. His paintings have a solid quality without being static. The colors he uses foster contemplation but do not challenge the senses. Hansen’s paintings explore the effects of light against dark, and unruly shadow contrasting with defined shape. His vision is contemporary and his environment is decidedly urban.
