Gustav Klimt was born in Wien in 1862. His father was a goldsmith and an engraver. Klimt studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Vienna. In 1897, he led the "Viennese Secession" that was formed by a group of artists, architects and decorators. Klimt travelled extensively throughout Europe, exhibiting successfully in Berlin, Paris and Italy, where he studied and learned mosaic techniques. The stylized and decorative nature of his paintings are clearly influenced by Gustave Moreau and the English Pre-Raphaelites. Klimt emphasized the use of the ornament that became as important as the subject itself. Gustav Klimt died in Wien in 1918.
